Notes | The North Eastern Ensign (Fri. 19th Jan. 1912) Obituary: "Mr John Garlepp of Benalla West, expired on the 11th inst., his remains being interred next day in the Church of England portion of the local cemetery, the Rev Mr Farquharson reading the burial service. The late Mr Garlepp was an old resident of the district and spent much of his earlier life at Devenish, where his parents conducted a hotel for some years. He also carried on farming and carpentering at Lima, but sold out at the latter place and about ten years ago settled in Benalla along with his wife and family, the latter consisting of two boys and a girl, the eldest boy being near manhood. Deceased last year partly abandoned his usual calling and took from the council a contract for cleaning the channels of Benalla West, but he had not been long at work before he became ill, and gradually sank till he expired altogether. Deceased was a hard working man, whose death will be regretted by his many old friends scattered all over the North-east. General sympathy is felt for his wife and family in their bereavement." |
