Notes From Benalla Standard (Tues. 21 Feb. 1922):
"On Thursday last an inquest was held at the Melbourne morgue concerning the death of Mr. John Garlepp, which took place at the Melbourne Hospital recently as the result of an accident near the Benalla Gardens on 7th May last, when a quantity of earth fell on him and injured his spine. After hearing the evidence of the curator of the gardens (Mr. H. Briggs) and Mr. George Burns, who were working with deceased at the time, Dr. Cole, the coroner, returned a verdict of accidental death, there being no blame attachable to any one."
Reporting on the accident, the North Eastern Ensign referred to him as a 'young man'
